No Sew Costume: Bird’s Nest in a Tree

Last night I went to a Halloween festival wearing a fun costume I put together in less than an hour.  My bird’s nest in a tree required no sewing and was made completely from items I already had at home.

Supplies:

  • Green shirt (tee, cardigan, or sweater)
  • Green and brown felt
  • Markers
  • Fabric Glue
  • Toy nest and bird

The tree sweater only took a few minutes to make.  I found a green cardigan that I’m sure I’ve never worn hanging in my closet.  The leaves were cut with out a pattern from different colors of felt.

I quickly used a marker to draw some details on the leaves.

My initial plan was to sew the leaves on the sweater but then I realized fabric glue would make this a quick project.  My three year old daughter wanted to help with the costume so I let her stick the leaves to the sweater after I had applied fabric glue to the back of the felt.

She did a great job!

The nest is made with a toy from my daughter’s playroom.  Years ago she received a Wild Republic nest and set of plush birds for a gift.  She agreed to let me borrow the nest and one of the birds to make a headband for my costume.  I didn’t want to do any permanent damage to the nest so instead of permanently attaching it to a headband, I cut four small slits on the bottom of the nest.  I made sure not to cut through the top of the nest (the slits are not visible on top).  The headband slid through the slits to hold it in place.

I used a small amount of fabric glue to attach the bird to the top of the nest.

I wore brown pants to go along with the tree theme but this would also work with green pants or jeans.  My costume was very popular with little kids once they learned my bird could chirp!

Halloween Kids Craft – Paint Chip Frankenstein

With Halloween just days away, quick and frugal kids crafts are happening frequently in our home.  The Paint Chip Frankenstein was a fun project this week!

Supplies:

  • green paint chip (most stores have plenty of these out for free)
  • black glitter
  • googly eyes
  • green pom poms
  • black marker (not shown)
  • glue (not shown)

Start by giving your Frankenstein sparkly hair.  Apply glue to the top of the paint chip and then sprinkle on the glitter.  My daughter loved this step…the messier, the better!

Tap off the excess glitter and glue on the googly eyes.

Glue on the pom poms and then draw a silly face with a marker.

In just a few steps you have a cute Frankenstein!  Perfect little Halloween kids craft!

Make a few and string them on a banner for more fun!

Preschool Halloween Snack – Candy Corn Pizza

Earlier this week I shared the Frankenstein Jello Cups my daughter shared with her preschool class.  In addition to the jello cups we also brought Candy Corn Pizza.  The slices were extra small for little hands.  I’m tempted to call them “Candy Corn Pizza Bites”.

I’ve seen this Halloween themed pizza everywhere online recently but I wanted to try and make a smaller version.

Ingredients:

  • Pizza Dough (homemade or store bought, we used Pillsbury canned pizza dough)
  • Biscuit cutter (or if you’re like me and don’t own one, just find something round)
  • Three different cheeses (white, orange, and yellow)

These cute snacks were quick to make.  It only took me 30 minutes.

1) Roll out your dough and cut into small circles.  I don’t own a biscuit cutter so I used the top to a cookie cutter set.

2) Bake the dough according to the directions (about 15 minutes).

3) Grate your cheese while the dough is baking.

Tip: Purchasing the cheese was time consuming for me because I couldn’t find a good combination for the orange and yellow.  I ended up using extra sharp cheddar, Wisconsin colby, and mozzarella.  That little piece of information might save you an hour in the grocery store!

4) Arrange the cheese on the pizza dough.  Start with the white in the middle.  Add a ring of orange and then edge with yellow.

5) Put the pizzas back in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

6) Use a pizza slicer to cut your tiny pizzas into wedges.  I also used the cutter to remove the excess melted cheese from the edges.

The kiddos loved them!

If you want to make this for a fun Halloween dinner, be sure to make a large pizza instead of the small biscuit size circles with your dough.
