Halloween is my favorite time of the year to make craft projects. My daughter is now five years old and has so many of her own great ideas. She gets excited each time I tell her plans for a new project. When I told her we would be working on a pumpkin project with Skittles and Starburst she couldn’t wait to get started. I was excited too because growing up, I loved digging through my trick or treat bag to find my favorite candies; Skittles and Starburst were always a desired treat. Together we had so much fun making a DIY candy covered pumpkin. The finished project is out with our festive decor next to the cutest Trick or Treat Halloween printable.

Supplies:

  • small pumpkin
  • Skittles and Starburst candy
  • hot glue gun
  • glue sticks

Depending on the size of your pumpkin you will need a lot of candy. With my daughter helping I’m sure more than a few Skittles and Starburst were eaten while working on our project. Luckily we purchased the Skittles & Starburst 30 Pack from Sam’s Club and had just enough candy to cover our pumpkin.

Begin by sorting the candy by type and color. My daughter worked on sorting all the candy as I enjoyed watching the great learning opportunity.

The glue gun should be kept away from children as it could easily burn little fingers. I applied a stripe of glue to the pumpkin and my daughter added the Starburst. The glue lines should follow the natural lines in the pumpkin. The glue dries quickly so work fast applying the candy or only use enough glue for a few candies before adding more.

Continue adding Starburst to the vertical lines of the pumpkin. We chose to work opposite of the last line we completed to make sure they were spaced evenly. Then fill in the spaces between lines with Skittles. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the space and add the Skittles a few at a time.

  1. What a fun idea!! I love how colorful that pumpkin is…perfect for Fall decor. I’m also amazed that you were able to unwrap the Skittles/Starburst and still save enough to cover the pumpkin! Thanks for sharing! #client

  2. This is too creative. Yup it’s that time of year. I am actually not a fan of halloween for the only reason that my kids literally try to OD on candy, and I spend the next 3 months hiding their candies from trick or treating. But, they love it. Not saying I am going to make this, but I could truly appreciate the creativity in this.

  3. Here in our country, we don’t celebrate Halloween in every home. (only at malls and some school) But, I want my kids to experience it so I’ll add this to our project list!

  4. Oh gosh I love it! There are so many creative ways to decorate a pumpkin! I’d have a hard time not eating the candy but it’d be worth it!
