This summer has been hot, really hot. We’ve already seen 120° and have spent every afternoon in our backyard pool trying to cool off. When it’s too hot to be outside we have been indoors trying to stay cool with summer crafts. Dr Pepper® is adding to our summer craft inspiration with their new “Pick Your Pepper” designs. Pop art, sharks, unicorns and more are bright, festive and fun – just what you need to add some color to your summer parties! We recently picked up a box of unicorn cans and made geometric summer placemats to keep us smiling through this ridiculously warm Arizona record breaking heat wave.
While picking up summer barbecue groceries at our local Kroger grocer, Fry’s food, we purchased a 12-pack of the new Dr Pepper Pick Your Pepper cans. Currently until 8/15, buy any three varieties of Dr Pepper 12pk or 8pk 12oz and receive a free 20oz (while supplies last). The pop art logo on the box is eye catching and we hoped it would be full of the unicorn cans for a fun summer dinner party. With a big variety of summer art cans, we were happy to have a box full of our favorite – UNICORN CANS! They were the perfect inspiration for our geometric summer placemats craft and made a great setting for a summer dinner party.
Dr Pepper Pick Your Pepper cans and bottles are available in many unique designs sure to bring back favorite memories full of neons, big hair, roller skates, and more. The individual Dr Pepper bottles have a Snapchat code for a fun #PickYourPepper filter, adding another layer of fun to your summer parties. Our next pool party will surely bring out some fun Dr Pepper snaps!
Geometric Summer Placemats Craft
Supplies
- brightly colored mesh plastic canvas (multiple sheets for placemat background and shapes)
- hot glue gun
- scissors
Set aside full set of mesh plastic canvas sheets for placemats. We made a set of hot pink placemats but these would be fun mismatched for summer too. Cut several other brightly colored sheets into geometric shapes. There are no rules – cut short, long, wide, and thin varying shapes and sizes.
Carefully use the hot glue gun to adhere the shapes to the base of the mesh placemat. Be sure you are working on a surface you don’t mind getting messy (not your pretty kitchen table!) because the glue bleeds through the mesh. Simply push down on the corners to secure in place and allow to dry for a few minutes. The clear glue will dry invisible.
Repeat until you have a full set of geometric summer placemats for the most fun summer dinner parties! My summer table is making us feel better about this silly heat wave bringing 120°. No thanks to those blazing temperatures but we’ll take bright geometric placemats and unicorn Dr Pepper cans all summer long!
How are you beating the heat this summer?

This is a really cute idea! I wouldn’t have thought to hot glue gun a placemat as a craft. I’ll have to try this!
What a neat idea! I have never used placemats before and have been debating them. This would be fun to do with my niece and nephew when they visit.
These are so fun! They would be a hit at any summer cookout. Of course they totally remind me of the 80’s! So I think an 80’s themed cookout would be an amazing idea! 😉
So cute!! My daughter would love making these for our dining room table!
This is such a great idea! Reminds me a little of that retro style or even the 80s. I love the colors! It’s so easy to make as well, you don’t need a lot of effort!
I love how individual each one is. That makes the table look fun and festive. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Those are so fun to make! I’ll gather the things needed and make it with my daughters, I’m sure they’ll love it
Those are so cool! They remind me of the early nineties.
Even though I try not to drink a lot of soda, I’m a suck for Dr. Pepper. The tarte flavor always hits the spot. Love this unicorn cans. The go perfectly with the geometric placemats.
My kids would absolutely love these placemats! I think I am going to have to pick up some plastic canvas this week!
My oldest niece is a HUGE Dr. Pepper fanatic – I didn’t know they had fun limited release cans! Her birthday is next week… I’m going to have to scoop some of these up for the party! 🙂
I love the new look of the Dr. Pepper cans! This is a super cute idea for a placemat too! Thanks for sharing.
This is adorable and what a fun design project! I rarely drink soda but I sometimes a Dr. Pepper is perfect for a really hot day in this heat!
I absolutely love this idea! So simple and doable and the result is so nice. Now to get my hands on a hot glue gun 😮
