This week our family has been soaking up the sun at our favorite beach resort. Every year we look forward to a full week in Carlsbad where we get outside and play in the sandy beach and salty water. This year I planned ahead and brought our beach bag already packed so it would be easy to get to the beach quickly with out family beach day essentials. Just like at home, playing at the beach has us ping ponging from one activity to the next. Just when you get settled into your comfy beach chair with a book while little sister is building sand castles nearby, she’s ready to jump waves in the water again. During some of her earliest toddler visits to the beach, our youngest daughter developed a love for smashing sand castles. Mostly it was smashing sand castles other people had built and left on the beach. She is such a spirited kid and it took years for us to get her to only want to smash her own creations. This week at the beach she spent hours building complex castles so she spend an amazing 60 seconds stomping through them.

Snacks and Drinks

Our beach days in Carlsbad have been long but even on the visits we only plan to be at the beach for an hour, snacks and drinks are essential. We bring water in our refillable water bottles and sometimes bring along a few extra beverages.

I remember when I was a child my grandmother had a bottle of fermenting tea under her kitchen sink. She said it helped her feel nice everyday. Boogie Boards and Sand Toys

We often stay at a beach resort where boogie boards and sand toys are provided at no additional cost. The convenience is spectacular because you simply check out the items on the beach and don’t have to carry them to and from your room. However, sometimes on busy days the boogie boards and toys are all checked out by the time we arrive. A couple of years ago we purchased our oldest daughter her own boogie board to alleviate not being able to rent one during the busier times of year. Little sister doesn’t quite have her own yet but she’s been too busy working on sand castles to mind.

Sun Care Essentials

Skip the added complaining and put sunscreen on your children before arriving to the beach. Pack it along for another application throughout the day. Regardless if my daughters agree to wear them initially hats for the entire family are in our beach bag too. An umbrella is a great way to add shade to your seats on the beach and are another item we rent from the beach resort during our stays.

We added another layer of creativity to the sand castle building with T-Rex Tape. Taping together sand castle molds was so much fun but definitely not an option with your everyday tape from the utility drawer at home.
