Animal Science Children’s Reading List
Our daughters have both always love to read and we do our best to make sure that the evolving digital world is not their only resource for books. We visit the library often and keep their bedroom shelves stocked with book options. Every night continues to end with a book and it’s always a nice surprise when little sister asks for a book about animal science. This holiday season I gifted them both with National Geographic Kids books and we’re looking forward to their time off from school to read them together.
Animal Science Children’s Reading List
- Doggy Defenders (for ages 4-8)
- Dog Breed Guide (for ages 8-12)
- Cat Breed Guide (for ages 8-12)
- Cat Science Unleashed (for ages 8-12)
- Little Kids Big Book of Pets (for ages 4-8)
Read more about our favorite National Geographic Kids books below.
The new Doggy Defenders book series teaches children about service dogs and shares stories about featured animals. Little sister is going to love learning about all four of the featured dogs in this series. The books are for children age 4-8 but I’m sure big sister will enjoy these stories too.
The Dog Breed Guide: A Complete Reference to Your Best Friend Fur-Ever is a great resource to learn about dog breeds and also read about our own dog, Sophie the Siberian Husky.
Books about cats are always a win in our home. The Cat Breed Guide: A Complete Reference to Your Purr-Fect Best Friend is little sister’s new favorite book. She’s learning and likely doing some research on her own for the perfect pitch when she asks for her next kitten.
She’s also had a ton of fun with Cat Science Unleashed: Fun Activities to do with Your Feline Friend and I’m not sure our cat Toby knows what he’s in for this holiday break. All jokes aside, the book has 22 safe and cat-friendly activities that are paired with photos and facts for an educational experience with your cat at home.
Lastly, the Little Kids First Big Book of Pets is a detailed account of appropriate pets for children with all the details sharing how big of a responsibility caring for each kind of pet is. Of course, little sister is confident she can handle them all and would love one of each. Reading the book together has been a great opportunity to discuss being a responsible pet owner and what makes each animal unique.

My daughter is now 22 and doing her Masters, but when she was younger we used to read a lot.Luckily back then the digital world wasn’t as popular as it is now, which helped!. National Geographic was a favorite.
My middle daughter would love these books! She loves learning everything she can about animals.
I used to read these when I was a kid! I love how they explained everything, and looking through the issues at all the gorgeous pictures was my favorite part. This is a great idea for a gift.
My kids love these kind of books. I’ll check it if it’s available in my location.
Great books. I remember that I loved this type of book when I was a child.
