Funny Kids Talk about Lice
What in the world are super lice? That’s the exact question I presented to my daughters last week when they were sitting together. Overhearing our two girls, four and 10-years-old, talk about lice was hilarious. They didn’t go into the conversation with much background knowledge beyond knowing that occasionally they get a letter sent home in their backpacks saying a classmate has lice. They knew it was something they definitely did not want and they thought they knew a lot about how to make sure it didn’t come home from school with them. They did not know anything about super lice. By the end of the conversation, I helped answer some big questions and they know our house is already equipped with a Licefreee® from CVS to kill super lice and their eggs if they ever end up visiting my sweet girls’ hair for an uninvited visit.
What in the World are Super Lice?
Before presenting my daughters with the facts, I sat them down and asked this question. Both girls responded they must be really big lice. I quickly followed up asking what are lice. My 4-year-old daughter explained they are bugs like mosquitos that make your head itch. Her big sister interrupted to remind her they are very small and not big like mosquitos, but maybe super lice could be similar in size. I didn’t laugh to preserve their confidence in the conversation but I did respond with some factual information.
- Super Lice are what common lice have evolved to after years of exposure to over the counter lice products.
- They have built up immunity to products created to combat them at home, at school and on the playground – all the places your children spend most of their days.
- According to a 2016 study, Super Lice have been found in 48 states.
Little sister proudly declared she understands Super Lice are bugs that live in your hair with superpowers. Exactly. That makes them extra special and we should meet them. No, absolutely not. Yeah, they totally get it. Super Lice = super cool = super nice = super friends = NO.
Lice Fun Facts for Kids
- Lice are small wingless bugs about the same size as a sesame seed.
- They have three pairs of legs.
- Lice can easily attach themselves to your hair.
- They are white to light gray colored.
- Lice eat blood, human blood, about 5 times in a 24 hour period.
- They can live for about 36 hours without food.
- Females can lay about 10 eggs per day.
Licefreee® Spray! has been tested to be effective in killing both super head lice and eggs. Surprisingly, most schools do have no‐nit policies requiring that all eggs are removed from the hair. The Licefreee® Kit includes everything you need to combat super lice and comb out the dead eggs.
Lice Myths Debunked for Kids
- Head lice can’t fly or jump.
- Lice cannot live on pets.
- They like clean hair. Getting lice does not mean you have poor hygiene.
What To Do if Lice is in Your Classroom
Big sister had some tips to share with her little sister about what to do if you find out a classmate has reported having lice.
- Don’t share hats, hair accessories, scarves, clothes or play costumes.
- Wear your hair up and close to your head, buns for long hair are always our go-to when there is lice in a classroom where our children attend school.
- Use homeopathic Licefreee® Everyday Shampoo daily to help avoid head lice reinfestation.
My daughters have never had lice but we have received a note in their backpacks multiple times advising a peer was sent home with lice. Of course, this sends all the worst-case scenarios visiting your mind all night for weeks. After talking through all the questions and explaining how Licefreee® from CVS can help, my daughters aren’t worried.
