Holiday Traditions Tech Edition
Ever since the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet arrived to our home, little sister has not wanted to put it down. With two daughters growing up in this ever evolving world full of technology, their creativity shines in ways I never imagined possible as a kid. Last weekend we celebrated our oldest daughter’s 10th birthday with a sleepover. She had a small group of friends over and to make it extra special, our playroom was transformed with personal teepees, stringed lights and tables topped with lanterns and marquee lights for ever guest. Little sister requested a teepee in her own room so her and I could read holiday books while her big sister was busy crafting with sleepover friends. Her new tablet was a great addition to our holiday story time. Add in a teepee, fuzzy panda sleep mask and one incredibly excited three year old and you have the cutest little holiday reading tent.
The Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet is the #1 kids tablet in the U.S. and comes with a kid proof case and two year warranty. If you know little sister, you know how appealing this is for our family. She’s the kid that gets herself into the stickiest situations and with the biggest heart, is devastated when she accidentally breaks everything she touches. The no questions asked replacement policy is one I hope we never have to use but also one I’m absolutely relieved to have. Each tablet also comes with a one year subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited which provides access to over 20,000 books, videos, audible books, apps, games and more.
Our holiday reading tent is a new tradition to our family but definitely a play on our long standing holiday book tradition every night leading up to Christmas day. In past years we’ve built up our book collection with a holiday book advent gifting calendar. But now with access to audibles online, we are having more fun discovering new favorite books on the Amazon tablet.
As she’s getting older little sister is also easily discovering new material online and unfortunately that causes concern for her accidentally stumbling on inappropriate content. With the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet, I have all the control. The Parent Dashboard settings in FreeTime allow parents to set time limits, adjust age filters, enable/disable web browser access, and choose whether to allow in-app purchasing. In addition to control the usage on the tablet, using the Parent Dashboard Browser enables parents to add content remotely so your child can be surprised by favorite books and other holiday content magically appearing on their tablet.
Thousands of books and videos provide endless age appropriate educational opportunities. Holiday book titles on Amazon FreeTime include
- Bobby Bright Spends Christmas in Spain
- Christmas Under the Snow
- Corinna the Christmas Elf
- Early One Christmas Morning
- Holiday Stories for Children
- Simon the Snowball
- The First Christmas Tree
- The Gingerbread Man and Other Children’s Favorites
- The Great Sled Race
- The Happiest Christmas Tree
- The Night Before Christmas
- The Snow Man
- There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow
- Tom and Jerry: Santa’s Little Helpers
- Winter Angels and Magic Snowflakes
- Wintertime Fun: Snow
The Amazon device encourages learning while playing and is designed for children as young as three years old. The simple design is excellent for small hands and little sister quickly learned she could go back to the home screen with the circle on the bottom of the large screen.
The Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet features an 8” HD display, quad-core processor, 32 GB of storage with up to 400 GB of expandable storage via a microSD card slot, and up to 10 hours of battery life. It is available for $129.99 and includes a kid-safe bumper, one year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, and two-year worry-free guarantee.
Do you have holiday traditions that could be upgraded by technology too?

I love the parent controls. The internet can be a scary place but it can also be a place for fun and education.
Very cute app. And love the parent controls, the internet is a scary place.
We just got each of my kids a fire tablet for Christmas. The school has really been encouraging them to have one for learning exercises and so we gave in. We had one for them to share last year, and it has been amazing, but with one tablet and 3 kids, it was time for some new ones so we didn’t have to worry about melt downs.
Tablets are such handy tools. Specially with kids! You can have education and entertainment in just one place. Great idea for the holidays!

The grandkids have the adult verison of this. I’d love to get them the kids version because I think it would be better suited to them. I’m going to go check them out and see what all differences there are.
That reading teepee sounds like so much fun! Thanks for sharing and for this great review!
