Summer STEM Project | Mechanical 3D Puzzle Hand
Earlier this school year my daughter brought home a mechanical hand she had made in her third grade engineering class. The project was made with cardboard, plastic straws and string. She was very proud and told me she would like to make another over summer break. I started looking online for instructions to replicate the engineering project then found something even better, the Wood Trick Mechanical 3D Puzzle Hand.
The Mechanical 3D Puzzle Hand arrived just in time for a summer STEM project and one my daughter is very excited to complete. All the Wood Trick models are made from safe and environmentally friendly wood from all-natural trees without any added toxins or glues. Assembling the mechanical models requires spatial, tactile, and motor skills which enhances creative thinking skills, promotes critical thinking, and develops problem-solving and reasoning.
Each wooden puzzle comes with all the pieces and detailed instructions with illustrations. Online each puzzle has information about the complexity, number of parts and estimated time for completion. The Mechanical 3D Puzzle Hand has 199 pieces, is difficult and has an estimated project time of three and a half hours for the recommended age of 14. My 9 year old daughter has been building complex projects in her engineering class at school and confidently felt she would be able to complete this summer STEM project.
About an hour into the project she asked her dad for assistance. They intently worked for a couple of hours together and then marked the instruction booklet to save their place.
My daughter is about half way through the summer STEM project and is so proud of what she has already accomplished.
Once completed the wooden hand is fully functional and can even pick up items. Assembly is fun for both children and adults and has been a great project for my daughter and her dad to work on together.
We have lined up a few summer camps but also have a healthy list of summer STEM projects like the Wood Trick Mechanical 3D Puzzle Hand. Do you have fun camps and projects arranged for your children to continue learning over summer break?

This would be super fun to do all summer long, especially on those rainy days! I bet my husband would love to do this with the kids too!
That looks like a project that will really make you think. My son’s in school for most of the year so we let school breaks be for break time.
