This Halloween we’ve already had a few events requiring family costumes. With a busy schedule at home and a month full of travel I quickly put together easy DIY family costumes. We’ll be attending the SeaWorld Halloween Spooktacular wearing easy DIY macaroni penguin costumes. My daughter loves the silly orange and feather tassles adorning the top of the hoodies.
Easy DIY Macaroni Penguin costume tutorial
Supplies:
- black hoodie or hooded sweatshirt
- white t-shirt
- orange felt
- feathers
Cut fabric from the white t-shirt to make an oval on the tummy of your hoodie or sweatshirt. If you’re using a hoodie cut down the middle then pin the pieces to each side next to the zipper.
Cut two long triangles and pin them to the top center of the hood with the points facing down. Pin several feathers to the top of the triangles.
Use a sewing machine to straight stitch around the edge of the white tummy. Then zig zag across the top of the orange triangles. Reinforce each feather by stitching the top several times. Cut the felt into strips up to the stitch line being careful not to cut the feathers.
Attend a costume party, play dress up or go trick or treating wearing your new easy DIY Macaroni Penguin costume!
As the SeaWorld kid blogger, my daughter recently shared a couple of fun kids craft costume ideas on the Inside SeaWorld blog. She is just five years old and designed the costumes all by herself. I did the cutting but she constructed the costumes on her own. Her kids craft DIY fish costume is perfect for a sea inspired costume party or storybook parade. She will be wearing it to school as a Rainbow Fish costume for the storybook character parade.
Her kids craft DIY turtle shell was a favorite project. She painted a cardboard shell and I helped make straps so she could wear it like a backpack.
Follow me on instagram to see my family wearing our macaroni penguin costumes in SeaWorld this weekend! The Halloween Spooktacular features silly and spooky shows, characters in costumes, and plenty of treats. My daughter is most excited to see the special Halloween sea lion show featuring her favorite, Clyde. The event is on display every weekend September 27 – October 26. You still have time to stop by this weekend!

Adorable idea!! Penguins are so cute, and kids as penguins are even cuter! I love how easy this costume is to make.
I am all about saving money, and to me honestly, halloween costumes should always be DIY. However, my kids are starting to protest the DIY as they see their friends in the fancy costumes. I love how yours came out though.
