Arizona Indoor Rock Climbing Gyms

Outside of visiting rock climbing gyms for a fun activity with friends, both my husband and I didn’t know much about the sport. Our oldest daughter was always an active child and participated in many different organized sports. She played soccer, hockey, swam and participated in gymnastics before she was introduced to rock climbing. The summer after kindergarten she attended a week-long day camp at AZ on the Rocks in Scottsdale and spent the rest of the summer talking about her experience rock climbing.

That same summer the gym sent home a note asking if she was interested in trying out for a youth recreational team. We didn’t invest the time to further inquire. The following summer we had the same experience. Our daughter loved rock climbing at the day camp, and we received a letter noting her potential as a climber. This time we took action and our daughter has been climbing ever since. She started on a recreational team then moved up to a competition team and is now wrapping up a full year on the advanced team. We often are asked about how she started climbing and if there are other Arizona gyms we would suggest for our friends to visit. We are by no means experts, but my consistent over-sharing of #ProudMom moments has inspired other families to pursue rock climbing too. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) provides resources to Arizonans for a healthy lifestyle and we are thrilled to be part of the messaging that is passionate about helping families get active together. This list of Arizona Rock Climbing Gyms is full of locations we have personally visited and would be thrilled to recommend to those of you that live nearby.

Each gym on the list has a youth rock climbing and is enthusiastic about young climbers. Most of these teams have climbers that our daughter has been competing against for the past several years. We have also had the opportunity to meet many family friends, coaches and owners through our experiences visiting these locations. The climbing community is very kind and welcoming to inexperienced families that are interested in learning about the rock climbing sport. All equipment is available to rent, and you must learn how to appropriately use it prior to climbing in each gym. Every location is unique to its own rules and requirements, but all have safety guidelines and trained staff to assist participants of all ages.

We recognize there are local gyms not on this list, but we wanted to stay true to sharing information on gyms we have personally visited. This list will evolve as we visit more locations and new indoor rock climbing gyms open. Exciting news, Gilbert, where we currently live, expects two new gyms to open this year: Alta Climbing and Arches Climbing + Fitness.

  1. I love indoor rock climbing gyms, they are an excellent way to have fun during physical play time. I know a few places around here that have some options, I try to take the kids whenever they’re not feeling super introverted (which is rare).

    • I love that your family visits rock climbing gyms together! Our youngest is just getting comfortable climbing so we are having tons of fun when she goes to the gym with her sister.

    • Rock climbing is getting more and more popular because of recent exposure with it being in the 2020 olympics – definitely look to see if there is a climbing gym near you!

  2. My daughter is just about to pass her level 1 NICS for rock climbing and bouldering – we go for a 2 hour session every week and she absolutely loves it. Like a rat up a drainpipe! So glad your daughter enjoys it too – such a fantastic sport for kids and teaches them many skills Sim x SimsLife
