Chicken Fried Rice Recipe | Chinese New Year

Beginning in kindergarten, our oldest daughter was in a Mandarin Immersion learning program. Her curriculum included spending half her day with a Mandarin speaking teacher in the teacher’s first year of living in America. She thrived and enjoyed learning the language and culture. By the time she was transitioning to a different science based school in second grade, she could speak Mandarin surprisingly well and identified characters while reading. She could also write numbers through 100 and simple words. Everyday at home she was incorporating the Chinese culture in how she completed her homework along with other parts of her nightly routine. She had many favorite chinese food dishes but frequently asked for Ling Ling Fried Rice and Potstickers. Jump ahead a couple of years and although she’s no longer in the Mandarin Immersion program, she does have a Mandarin class in her weekly schedule. This week her homework from Mandarin class included a food vocabulary sheet, perfect timing with the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday and a great reason to celebrate with a new easy chicken fried rice recipe.

Our daughter certainly doesn’t have the same amount of Mandarin homework now compared to what we saw while she was in the Mandarin Immersion program. However, because she was so used to learning half her day with a Mandarin speaking teacher, she often seeks out her own additional study guides to learn outside of school. Each week she receives a Mandarin homework packet and she generally finishes all the work on the first it comes home with her. This week her homework packet is all about chinese food, a great tie in to a family meal to celebrate Chinese New Year.

  2. I think that is so neat to be in an immersion program like that. I’ve wanted to get my kids into spanish speaking immersion programs. The school my kids are on a wait list for teaches spanish all the way from Kinder through 8th grade. We’ll see if they get in. Anyway, exciting that you found a recipe that speaks to her!

  4. What a wonderful opportunity for Gabie! My grandsons are 1/4 Chinese so we always celebrate the Chinese New Year with them. They all three love fried rice and this preparation couldn’t be easier!
