This time of year always feels the most busiest as we prepare for back to school. With so much currently on my list to get done it’s impossible to spend an afternoon leisurely strolling through the mall with my eight year old daughter looking for every back to school trend. Speaking of back to school trends, why didn’t I save my entire late 80s and early 90s childhood wardrobe for her to be stocked with a closet full of graphic tees, neons, mini backpacks, charms and chokers? She just started third grade this week and we turned to JCPenney for all the affordable back to school shopping trends. Her absolute favorite find was the sequin flip tops made with sequins known to many moms of elementary aged girls as “mermaid sequins”. Her first day of school outfit was all about the victorian romance trend with a toss in of her new favorite color, neon green. She was the most excited I’ve ever seen her for the first day of school.
I grew up in a very small town and didn’t have many in store shopping experiences for back to school shopping in elementary school. My mom creatively made the experience really exciting for us every year with the JCPenney catalog. She made a big deal out of it arriving in the mailbox and we spent hours tabbing our favorite items in the book. We couldn’t wait for the living room fashion show we put on the day our package arrived. Shopping at JCPenney with my own daughter this year brought back all those memories of shopping with my own mom when I was about the same age. JCPenney has a variety of back to school fashion at great price points. This year my daughter was much more involved with back to school shopping selections than our previous years preparing for the upcoming school years. She had very specific clothes in mind and even more specific accessories she was looking for when I took her out for a day of shopping.
The victorian romance trend is Bohemian and feminine with Artisan details in rich textures such as velvet and lace. The details are playfully offset with distressed denim. Rich jewel tones surrounded by soft neutrals and dusty rose make this trend bold with a sweet softness.
For this look she paired a navy Arizona tunic top with dainty lace and velvet details with Arizona boyfriend jeans featuring a daisy patch. Her shoes are Arizona Kimye girls sneakers with pom poms. The green neon socks were her own personal flair. Her first day of school wouldn’t have felt right without the perfect choker to go with her new outfit.
Let’s talk about those sequin flip tops. All summer long I’ve heard my daughter talking about mermaid sequins. She’s asked for them on every surface possible including all decor in her own bedroom and every clothing item. The mighty large price tags have all of us mommas dreading our daughters begging for these pretties. But then we went back to school shopping at JCPenney and found the Total Girl Flip Sequin Tunic Top in many different designs. This is the most affordable “mermaid sequin” shirt I’ve seen this year and we came home with a few styles. Currently online they are Buy 1 Get 1 for a penny with free to store shipping so I suggest you take advantage of that sale right now. No really, right now. Watch my daughter flip the sequins to change the look of the shirt in my fun Facebook flip sequin top video.
We’ve always loved Jansport® backpacks and this year my daughter picked out a new Color Ink Wash design in the Big Student style. She added her own personalization with a couple of Carole Charms.
JCPenney offers unique professional services including hairstyling through the Salon by InStyle and photography through the Portrait Studio. My daughter had her hair cut and styled earlier that morning at her favorite local salon but she was quick to point out she could get a back to school manicure at JCPenney while we were wrapping up back to school shopping. A few hours at one of our favorite department stores and all our back to school shopping was finally complete.
