If you saw my weight loss journal or even glanced at my personal photos over the past 10 years you would immediately recognize my fluctuating weight. Gaining and losing 10 pounds happens seasonally for me and I’ve recognized the need to do more for myself than diet and exercise. My strong personality makes me very competitive and losing weight is not something I particularly struggle with. My challenges come after I’ve lost that 10 pounds again. Why do I continuously move back to my old habits when I promised I wouldn’t after losing the same weight time and time again? NeuroGym is helping me work through those underlying issues and understand how to change my mindset by thinking about weight loss differently. While on this journey, 5 ways to feel better about your body, will help you stay focused on your current progress instead of only waiting for results.

My weight loss journey isn't about losing a large amount of weight, it's about stopping the yo-yoing and self doubt every time I gain that 10 pounds back.

I grew up active and played sports my entire childhood. Although I always projected an outer confidence, my body insecurities started early. In fourth grade a boy in my class made a very mean comment about my legs comparing me to an overweight sitcom star. The insult affected me immediately and I vowed to never wear shorts again. Not wearing shorts in Arizona is unrealistic for a 10 year old child. I was not honest with my parents but do recall them asking about my sudden defiance to wear anything other than jeans. Years passed, I turned into a teenager, and that silly comment was no longer lingering in my mind when I got dressed every morning. After high school I moved to go to college and the insecurities felt by my 10 year old self came back. This is where my diet and exercise yo-yoing began.

Jump ahead a few years and I was running 8 miles every morning before going to class. I was engaged and excited to be in shape for our upcoming wedding. I lost a significant amount of weight but more than that, gained tremendous confidence seeing the changes I was making to my body.

Marriage, work, children – life happens and in between I was gaining and losing weight frequently. After my first daughter was born almost nine years ago I lost the weight I had gained from that pregnancy quickly with a strict diet and moderate exercise plan.

Through several years I again went up and down by 10 pounds seasonally and always felt determined to lose before holiday photos.

When little sister came along 6 years later I did not have the same weight loss experience following the birth of our first daughter. Our youngest daughter is now 2 years old and since her birth, I’ve gained and lost 10 pounds 5 times. In addition to the 40 pounds I gained from pregnancy, I’m currently at a higher weight and am tired of the yo-yo process.

I knew I needed to make some serious changes to my mindset. Taking the NeuroGym weight loss quiz was the first step and I’m excited to finally have a greater understanding of the emotional blocks that were preventing me from losing weight. The quiz is brand new but NeuroGym has been released with updates to the program over several years. The quiz only took about 10 minutes and then provided me with customized results in a video message to help understand my own weight loss challenges. I then watched the Winning the Game of Weight Loss Webinar and felt like John Assaraf, the founder of NeuroGym, was speaking directly to me. He pointed out that weight loss shouldn’t be for “seasons and reasons”. Thinking back to my most recent weight loss success of almost 20 pounds before our Hawaii family vacation, I knew it was time to make this change.

The free three hour webinar provides training from 4 experts: John Assaraf, JJ Virgin, Ari Whitten and Marc David explaining why people yo-yo and how important it is to real take a deeper look at the mind’s role in weight loss. The focus is on how mindset is crucial to the success of any weight loss goal. I registered for the NeuroGym online program and immediately started learning from the Winning the Game of Weight Loss lessons. As a NeuroGym member you receive access for life without any additional membership fees. There are 12 different levels and you must complete each before moving onto the next. Everyone is different so the online program really allows you to cater your learning style and speed to your own needs. Each level provides different innercises, science based techniques to help individuals unlock their brain’s fullest potential so they let go of the mental and emotional blocks that prevents him from losing weight and keeping it off. Learning innercises and how to make positive mindset changes has had a great impact in how I feel about my current self. I have stopped looking ahead to only what I want myself to be but instead now am focusing on where I am today. Practicing innercises and working through the NeuroGym system have helped me learn ways to feel better about your body and self image.

5 Ways to Feel Better About Your Body

Enjoy spending time where you currently feel comfortable.

Really enjoy the time you spend with loved ones or doing activities in your comfort zone. I have the most fun with my husband and daughters. We road trip and vacation often but more than just where we’re going, we enjoy our time together. I’m most comfortable acting silly with my daughters. Just this week my daughters and I visited a local aquarium to observe sharks. Shark week is a favorite in our home and this outing was tons of fun. We brought home our silly photo to remember this day.

Invest time in yourself.

Later that same day I came home and worked through another level of NeuroGym. While I easily have a long list of home chores and work tasks I could have focused on instead, I now am recognizing the value of investing time in myself.

Know your worth.

Knowing your worth and how much value you bring goes far beyond the workplace. I’m a strong, confident mother and know my daughters look up to me everyday to shadow my every move. Just like when I let that mean fourth grader’s comment about my legs slip behind me and pretend like I was over it, those insecurities don’t go away unless you really take the time to work on recognizing your own value.

Get active.

Running 8 miles everyday put me in the best physical shape of my life. I was 23 years old and now I’m not. Instead of focusing on my past accomplishments and comparing myself to the potential I had then, I recognize my body and place in life is different. A walk around my neighborhood is getting a fresh breath of air, some light exercise, and doing something to say, “hey, I did more than not doing anything.” That’s progress friends.

Stop making excuses.

I’m a mom with little people in my home depending on me every hour of everyday. I don’t have the time or I don’t have the money or I’m not ready can’t be excuses I lean on anymore. Mindset is the differentiating factor to retraining your brain. I’m still pulled in a million different directions. I’m still busy. I’m still trying to budget for groceries. But now I’m focused on feeling good about myself too. Stop making excuses and start positive changes right now.

I have had extensive experience with different weight loss methods although please keep in mind I have never had or considered surgery. My weight loss journey isn’t about losing a large amount of weight, my journey is about stopping the yo-yoing and self doubt every time I gain that 10 pounds back. I’ve worked with personal trainers, have followed strict diets, have joined weight loss programs that boast about “easy” diets and have journaled my progress since college. What I have not done, prior to my experience with NeuroGym, is try to understand why my weight continues to fluctuate.

  1. I definitely need to be more active. I have gained a ton of weight this year since I lost my mom in February and it’s time for me to start getting back into a comfortable body!

  2. I’m a weight loss coach. But an illness I had at a kid left me very behind others physically. And, even though I run and take a lot of exercise classes, as an adult I still feel like I’m very behind. That insecurity never goes away unless you work on it. If you lose the weight (like I did), you’ll just transfer the insecurity onto another part of yourself (my lack of physical ability.) You give some great advice. I especially love – invest time in yourself. I’ve felt guilty doing that, but it’s so important.

  3. I guess it’s the fact that you already lost 10 pounds, so your mind is like, “You lost the weight, you can go eat what you want now.” It’s really important to change your mind set when you’re losing weight and these tips are definitely helpful! Lose those 10 pounds and continue your routine, girl!

  4. I am in the same boat as you although I lost the weight. I felt good when I realized I had to workout at least five times a week buti can’t lose those last 5-10 pounds. I will think about using your methods.

  5. Love it – your tips are spot on! Especially the excuses part – I have been the queen of making excuses for myself over the years and it didn’t get me anywhere! Investing in yourself is an important one too!

  6. I feel your pain!! After my first born, I lost so much weight that I was actually skinnier than when I got pregnant with her. Then after the next two (and I like to blame it on the fact that they were boys lol) I gained about 10 pounds each that I haven’t been able to get rid of. My problem is starting a weight loss journey and giving it up half way through. I need to work on the No More Excuses and maybe this will help!

  9. When you don’t really want to do anything, it is easy to come up with an excuse as to why you shouldn’t. I think the ‘stop making excuses’ point is an excellent one because that is the core reason why we often don’t see the results we wish for. Will be interesting to take the quick and see the results about myself.

  10. I love to eat and just to be able to continue eating my treats, I stick to working out for an hour 4 to 5 days a week. Exercise helps me a lot in keeping me happy and cheerful.

  11. I’ve reached the point in life where my whole motivation for getting into a healthy space has shifted from appearance to a desire to be healthy and live longer. Not that I don’t care how I look – I do. But being around to play with my grandkids infinitely trumps a thin waist.
